A custom ceramic cup developed for use with an electrical appliance, requiring complex shaping, high manual involvement, accelerated sampling, and reliable production support under tight project timing.
Project Overview
This project involved the development of a custom ceramic cup for a premium UK gifting and lifestyle brand. The product was designed to work with an electrical appliance, which meant the ceramic form had to meet both visual and functional requirements.
The program required more than standard ceramic manufacturing. The cup shape was highly specialized, the manual process ratio was high, and the production cycle was slower than ordinary tableware. At the same time, the buyer expected strong production capability, fast project response, and support for multiple factory qualification documents and certifications.
Before working with FENN, the buyer had already approached several factories, but none were able to meet the combined requirements for product complexity, production expectations, documentation support, and project timing.
The Challenge
This was a difficult ceramic development project for several reasons.
First, the cup shape itself was unusual and technically demanding. It required experienced workers with strong hand-finishing ability, better process control, and careful handling during production. This was not a standard ceramic mug program that could be pushed through a simple, highly automated process.
Second, the project timeline was already tight when the buyer reached FENN. The buyer had spent time evaluating other suppliers before coming to us, so by the time development started, sampling and decision-making had to move quickly.
Third, the buyer also required a series of factory qualification documents and certifications as part of supplier evaluation. That meant the factory not only had to make the product well, but also had to respond in a structured and professional way on documentation, compliance readiness, and communication.
Finally, the project combined two difficult requirements that often conflict with each other:
- high manual complexity
- high volume expectations
That combination made supplier selection much more demanding.
What FENN Handled
Rapid project response
Once the project brief was confirmed, FENN moved quickly to accelerate mold development and sample preparation in order to recover lost time in the project schedule.
Complex ceramic development
We assessed the feasibility of the special cup form, coordinated mold opening, and supported early sample refinement for a product that required a higher level of manual workmanship and experienced technical handling.
Documentation and certification support
Alongside product development, we also prepared the factory documents, qualification materials, and certification-related information required by the buyer during supplier evaluation.
Production coordination during the trial order stage
After the first order was secured, we stayed closely involved during the early production stage, maintaining active communication with the buyer on quality expectations, production details, and delivery timing.
Ongoing adjustment and cooperation
Because this type of product required a careful learning curve, the project moved through an active adjustment period. FENN continued to cooperate closely with the buyer to align production execution with the required quality standard and shipping schedule.
The Outcome
The project moved successfully from urgent development to first-order execution.
Despite the technical difficulty of the ceramic form, the high manual process requirement, and the compressed project timing, FENN was able to respond quickly, complete sampling, support documentation review, and secure the buyer’s first order.
More importantly, the project did not stop at trial production. Through close communication, production coordination, and steady cooperation during the run-in period, the program developed from a trial order into an annual order relationship.
Over time, the cooperation evolved into a long-term partnership built on responsiveness, technical execution, and the ability to support a demanding ceramic product under commercial production conditions.
